EMI Music, the record label crippled by debt, announced yesterday that Elio Leoni-Sceti, its chief executive, is to leave after just 18 months and before completing a rescue plan.
People close to the company said Mr Leoni-Sceti and Guy Hands, whose Terra Firma private equity company owns EMI, had been unable to agree on a strategy for the plan, which was due to be presented to Mr Hands in the coming weeks.
Another person close to EMI said: “Elio jumped because he didn't see a way of delivering the business plan in a form that Guy would find acceptable.
“He didn't want to be associated with something that he didn't think would work and end up being sacked six months later when EMI is sold to Warner Music.”
Terra Firma has until June to present its investors with a justification for putting an extra £120m ($180m) into the company to prevent a breach of covenants that would see Citigroup, which holds £3.2bn of debt in EMI, seize the company.
The news about Mr Leoni-Sceti took the industry by surprise.
Mr Leoni-Sceti is to be replaced by Charles Allen, the former chief executive of ITV, who will move from non-executive to executive chairman.
There has been increasing speculation in recent months that EMI could end up being sold to, or merged with, Warner Music, one of its biggest rivals.
It also emerged yesterday that two of EMI's biggest acts, Pink Floyd and Queen, have been talking to other labels about transferring their loyalties. EMI has already parted ways with the Rolling Stones and Radiohead since the Terra Firma takeover.
A music industry executive present at one such discussion said that the sums of money being sought by both bands were “offputting”.
The back catalogues of both Pink Floyd and Queen are tied to EMI in lengthy contracts, but they have been exploring other ways of exploiting their music, this person said.
