American donors raised more than $150 million in four days for the Haiti relief efforts – a record for post-disaster fundraising.
According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, the Haiti funds top the $108 million raised in the four days immediately after Hurrican Katrina, and the $30 million raised in the days after the 2004 Asian Tsunami.
It is remarkable that Americans have opened their wallets to the tune of $150-million,” said the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s editor Stacy Palmer. “Unlike Katrina, this disaster occurred outside the U.S. economy is still in distress and unemployment, high.”
It’s unclear how much of the total was raised from wealthy donors. But the giving appears to be very broad based, with more than $12 million raised via cell phones and texting by the American Red Cross.
Of course, there will some knock-on effects from this wave of giving. Donations to other groups (arts, culture, colleges) could take a deeper hit this year, as philanthropists shift dollars to the more pressing needs in Haiti.
What’s more, the Chronicle cites a risk of “donor fatigue,” where donors aren’t able to muster more funds in the months and years to come to help make the relief effort more sustainable.
Gail McGovern, chief executive of the American Red Cross, said that while the organization’s focus is on immediate needs, it expects help will be needed in Haiti for many years.
“Make no mistake,”she said. “This is going to be a massive long-term recovery.”
Still, the first four days are a promising start.
